Spice Rack Organizer for a Small Kitchen: Drawer, Counter, Wall or Fridge?
Share
Calm Eden Sleep Journal · Updated October 3, 2026
Choose a spice rack by where it will live. A drawer insert saves counter space and shields jars from light; a countertop or rotating rack keeps everyday seasonings visible; a wall rack frees the worktop but needs suitable mounting; a magnetic shelf uses a steel fridge side; an under-sink rack uses lower-cabinet space. Measure the usable width, depth and height of that spot, plus your actual jar dimensions, before buying.
The spice rack that looks clever in a photo may block a cabinet door in your kitchen. Start with the space you have, the number of jars you use weekly and whether you want to see labels at a glance. For a small kitchen, placement is more important than how many tiers a rack has.
Six storage layouts compared
| Layout | Where it works | Measure first | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drawer insert or stepped tray | Deep enough drawer near the cooking area | Internal width, depth and clearance under the counter | Uses drawer space; jars may need to lie flat |
| Countertop tiers | Spare counter corner with vertical clearance | Footprint and distance to upper cabinets | Visible and quick to use, but takes preparation space |
| Rotating stand | Corner where it can turn freely | Diameter plus room for your hand to reach around it | Easy access from all sides; needs an uncluttered circle |
| Wall-mounted shelf | Solid wall or cabinet side near the cooking area | Wall width, depth, mounting surface and opening doors | Check how the rack attaches and whether drilling is allowed |
| Magnetic fridge rack | Flat magnetic steel side of a refrigerator | Usable flat surface, door swing and shelf load | Moveable with no drilling on compatible metal; not all fridge finishes are magnetic |
| Under-sink or lower-cabinet rack | Lower cabinet with free space beside the drain pipe | Internal width, depth and height, pipe position and door hinges | Out of sight and off the counter; you bend to reach it and the space can be damp |
For a renter, a freestanding drawer or counter design is easiest to move later. A wall rack may need anchors or a surface approved by your landlord. Never assume "no installation required" applies to every wall-hanging product—confirm how the particular rack attaches.
Measure the cabinet or drawer properly
- Width and depth: measure inside the cabinet or drawer rather than the outside front. Leave room for hinges, runners and a hand to reach the back row.
- Height: include the tallest jar with its lid on. A two-tier rack under a cabinet can fail because the upper row cannot be lifted out. Compare our spice jars and seasoning bottles against those measurements before choosing containers.
- Jar shape: round jars can roll in a drawer; a stepped insert or small rail helps keep labels facing up.
- Access: put the seasonings you use weekly at the front; seldom-used jars can live further back or higher up.
Keep spices usable, not just tidy
Light, heat and moisture are not kind to ground spices. If possible, keep the rack away from direct sun and the steam above a kettle or stove. A wall rack next to a hot hob may look convenient but is not always the best storage location. Label the lid or front of each jar with the spice name; an opening date is more useful than an elaborate alphabetic scheme you will not maintain.

Materials and cleaning
- Stainless steel: easy to wipe and a good fit for a rotating or counter design; check the stated grade where corrosion is a concern.
- Carbon steel: rigid and common in wall/counter racks; dry it after cleaning, especially around exposed cut edges.
- Plastic: light and easy to move in a drawer; confirm its shape fits the jars you already own.
- Magnetic iron: needs a compatible steel surface and enough hold for the weight of filled jars. Test with a fridge magnet before buying.
These are general material characteristics, not a performance test of any individual rack. Product pages should be checked for included accessories, jar capacity and care instructions; do not assume jars come with a rack unless the listing explicitly says so.
Magnetic and under-sink options
These two layouts use space most small kitchens leave empty, so they are worth checking before giving up counter room.
- Magnetic rack on the fridge: test the side panel with an ordinary magnet first, then check that the door still opens fully with the rack in place. Our Fridgespice magnetic iron rack ($49.90) is listed as movable with no installation.
- Magnetic jars: a magnetic jar holds one seasoning each. The Steelseason magnetic stainless steel jar ($29.90) is listed for solid seasonings; the listing does not say which surfaces it holds to or how much it holds, so ask before ordering.
- Under the sink: measure around the drain pipe and door hinges, and keep everyday ground spices somewhere drier if the cabinet is damp. The Spicetuck under-sink rack ($89.90) is an L-shaped carbon steel rack with two pull-out layers, listed for dishes and condiments.

Which should you choose?
- No spare counter? Start with a drawer insert if the drawer is deep enough; otherwise check a wall or magnetic option. If a dish rack is what fills the counter, our dish drying racks include sink and folding formats.
- Frequently changing jar sizes? A simple open counter rack can be more forgiving than fixed holes sized for matching jars.
- Need fast access from all sides? A rotating design is practical if you can leave space around it.
- Only a small number of spices? A narrow tier or magnetic shelf is often less awkward than a large multi-layer stand.
We stock several formats above. One listing called "Spicestep Kitchen Spice Rack" is described by its supplier as a fruit-and-vegetable basket rather than seasoning-jar storage, so it is intentionally not among our spice-rack recommendations.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best spice rack for a small kitchen?
Choose the format that fits your unused space: a drawer insert for hidden storage, a magnetic shelf if your fridge side is steel, or a narrow countertop rack if you have height but little width. Measure your jars and clearances first.
Should spices be kept next to the stove?
A rack right next to heat and steam is convenient but may expose spices to warmth and moisture. A nearby drawer, cabinet or cooler counter spot is often better.
How do I know if a magnetic spice rack will stick to my fridge?
Test the flat side of the fridge with an ordinary magnet. Some stainless-look doors and panels are not magnetic; check door swing and the rack's stated load as well.
Do spice rack organizers come with jars?
Some do and some do not. The racks shown here should not be assumed to include jars unless the individual product listing explicitly says they are included.
Can I use a drawer spice rack in a cabinet?
Possibly, but a shallow stepped drawer insert may not make jars easy to see on a deep shelf. Check the shelf's depth and whether a pull-out or rotating format would be easier to reach.
Can I keep spices under the sink?
You can, but the cabinet under a sink can be damp and jars at floor level are harder to see. It suits back-up jars, oils and bottles better than the ground spices you reach for every day. Check for leaks and measure around the drain pipe before fitting a rack.
How much does a spice rack for a small kitchen cost?
At Calm Eden, the racks in this guide were listed from $49.90 to $139.90 when checked on October 3, 2026, and a magnetic seasoning jar was $29.90. Simple wire or plastic racks from mass-market retailers can cost less, so compare the format, material and what is included.
