Hang it on the door and every arrival gets a welcome: a short, bright roll of bells, then quiet. This brass bell chime carries seven bells on a 56 cm cord — two tiers of three, with a heavier bell alone at the bottom that swings first and sets the rest off.

  • Seven brass bells, layered in tiers
  • Heavier base bell leads the chime
  • 56 cm cord — made for a door

A door can open and close so quietly that arrivals and departures go unnoticed. You may only realise someone has come in when you hear their voice from an adjoining room.

Aria sounds as the weighted lower bell begins swinging. Its movement pulls the cord, sounding each tier slightly apart from the other. Bright brass notes last two seconds before the chime becomes silent again.

Bätängö ni

Remove dust from the bells using a dry cloth. Without lacquer, brass gradually becomes the brown of an aged penny. Let that finish develop, or polish the bell cups to retain their brightness.

Designed to hang just inside doors

An adhesive hook on a door's inside edge is enough to hang it. The moving door sounds the bells without wiring, wind or batteries. It hangs freely while leaving room around the handle.

The sound

Rolling notes from two tiers

Six little bells produce overlapping bright notes as the upper canopy sounds just ahead of the lower. As movement subsides, the weighted bell adds a final low tone. The sequence lasts two seconds before becoming quiet again.

Windows and porches work too

Hang it from a window handle or shutter latch, where draughts move it a few times each hour. It can also sound outdoors on a sheltered balcony or beneath the roof of a porch. Between movements, light catches its pierced medallion.

Now I know when the kids are home

Hung it on the inside of the front door and I hear it from the kitchen over the extractor fan. It sits at just the right level — it cuts through, a little run of bells, and then it stops. Took a minute with a cup hook. The bottom bell is the one doing the work; it swings and everything above it follows.

Delicate, and that's exactly right

It's a narrow thing — about the length of my forearm and a half — and lighter than you'd guess from photos. That turns out to be the point: on a closing door it swings and chimes rather than knocking. The brass has a dull warmth to it rather than a shiny gold look, which suits our hallway.

On the shutter latch in the study

Mine lives on a shutter latch rather than a door, and the afternoon draught sets it off a few times an hour. It is long enough to hang properly clear of the sill, and the pierced medallion at the top catches the light between rings. A lovely thing to work next to.

What places are suitable for hanging it?
Choose somewhere with movement. It was designed for a door's inside edge, but a window catch, cupboard door or shutter latch also works. Another option is a hook in a place reached by a draught.
What volume is it?
For home use: a brief, bright sequence lasting two or three seconds, then silence. Its volume resembles a shop-door bell along a quiet street.
Is outdoor hanging suitable?
Yes, provided there is shelter overhead. Consider a garden room, shed doorway, covered balcony or porch. Brass develops a deeper tone as it weathers. The wooden beads and braided cord last longer when kept out of lingering rain; a protected location lets the chime last for years.
How is it mounted?
A loop at the cord's end fits over a cup hook, nail or existing door hook. The chime weighs 95 g, light enough for an adhesive hook, allowing you to hang it without drilling.
How will brass change with age?
Inside the home, the brass gradually takes on a warm brown tone reminiscent of an old penny, then stabilises. It has no lacquer finish. Polish the bell cups if you prefer to retain a brighter, paler appearance.
