Sometimes the calmest thing a room can do is hold one soft light, and this tempered glass table lamp does exactly that. A dome of opal glass that is hand-blown, with the milkiness sealed into the material itself, rests on a steel upright finished in chrome and a clear tempered glass foot.

  • A pull chain gives you a simple, satisfying switch
  • Comes in two sizes for different corners of your home
  • Uses a standard E27 bulb, which you supply

With one warm bulb inside, the glow arrives low and even, no bright spot, no filament to catch your eye.

Most bedside lamps get one of two things wrong. Either the shade is so thin that the bulb shows through as a bright spot visible from the pillow, or it is so opaque that all the light goes to the ceiling and you still cannot read. Opal glass is the old answer to that problem: a solid dome that turns one bulb into an even, low, honey-coloured pool.

Opal glass is neither frosted glass nor white plastic. The white is inside the material, a milky layer fused between two clear ones, so light does not bounce off a surface coating; it passes through the wall of the dome and comes out already softened. That is why there is no hot spot, no visible filament and no hard edge where the light ends. With a warm 2700K bulb the whole dome glows at about the brightness of a candle held close.

Below the dome, the column is chrome-plated steel over a clear sleeve, and the base is a 12 mm disc of tempered glass with its green cut edge left visible. The weight matters more than you might expect: at 3.8 kg the large lamp slides and does not topple when your foot catches the cable, and with the centre of gravity so low a duvet dragged past will not pull it to the floor. The switch is a ball chain at the neck, with no app, no touch sensor to fail and no standby light glowing in the dark.

There are two sizes for two different jobs. The one for the bedside is 18 cm across and 36 cm tall: it stands clear of a stack of books and lights the page without lighting the room. The other, 28 cm across and 47 cm tall, is closer to furniture, for a hallway console, a sideboard or the end of a long desk, and it can hold a corner alone. Both take a standard E27 screw bulb, which is not included, and both come with the plug you choose.

Wipe the dome with a barely damp microfibre cloth and dry it at once. The glass is white all the way through, so it cannot lose its colour, but water spots show on a matte surface. Keep glass cleaner and anything containing ammonia off the chrome, because it pits the plating in time; use a dry cloth on the column. Let the bulb cool before handling the dome. If the ball chain ever feels gritty, one drop of light oil at the neck and a few gentle pulls will free it. Do not force it.

Dome in hand-blown opal glass; column in chrome-plated steel over a clear sleeve; base a 12 mm disc of tempered glass with a polished green cut edge; mechanical ball-chain rotary switch; cable with inline strain relief. Takes one E27 screw bulb, 40 W maximum, not included; the light is designed around a warm 2700K filament or LED bulb. Verified sizes: the small is 18 cm across the dome and 36 cm to the top, and the large is 28 cm across and 47 cm to the top.

Why the light is so soft

The white is fused inside the glass and not sprayed on, so light passes through the wall of the dome and leaves already diffused, with no hot spot and no visible bulbWith a 12 mm tempered glass base and a low centre of gravity, a caught cable slides it and does not tip it, unlike a top-heavy fabric shadeA mechanical ball-chain switch at the neck: nothing to pair, nothing to fail and no standby LED glowing at you at three in the morning

Enough light for reading

On a bedside table it stands clear of a stack of books and puts a warm pool on the page without waking the rest of the room. The dome sends light down and to the sides and not up at the ceiling, and that is the difference between reading and squinting.

A hand pulling the ball-chain switch on the Opal™ Table Lamp

One pull and no menus

The switch is a ball chain at the neck of the lamp. You find it by feel in the dark, in the second before you are fully awake, with no phone, no app and no touch pad that comes on when the cat brushes past.

Glass, steel and some weight

An opal glass dome, a column of chrome-plated steel and a 12 mm disc of tempered glass beneath. At 3.8 kg it stays where you put it, and no plastic is visible or within reach of your hand.

Bought it for the glare, staying for the glass

I have astigmatism and most bedside lamps give me a starburst off the bulb. This one genuinely does not - the dome is thick enough that you cannot pick out a filament at all, just an even glow. Got the small one for a narrow nightstand and it fits with room for a book. Heavier than I expected, in a good way.

The large one is larger than you think

28 cm across sounds modest on a screen. In person it is a proper object and it did not fit the nightstand, which is entirely on me for not measuring. Moved it to the hall console where it looks right and lights the whole corner. No bulb in the box - worth knowing before it arrives on a Friday night.

The chain is the best part

Sounds daft but the pull chain is why I kept it. No fumbling for a phone, no touch pad going off on its own. It clicks, it is on. Chrome has stayed clean with a dry cloth and the glass base hides dust far better than the brushed metal one it replaced.

Is a bulb supplied with it?
No. It takes one standard E27 screw bulb of up to 40 W, and we leave the bulb out because it gives this lamp most of its character. For the light in our photographs, use a warm 2700K LED filament bulb of about 400 lumens. Above 3000K the opal glass looks grey and not honey-coloured, and that is the one thing that spoils it.
How do I choose the size?
The 18 cm dome at 36 cm tall is the size for a bedside or desk: it stands clear of a stack of books and lights a page without lighting the room. The 28 cm dome at 47 cm tall is closer to a piece of furniture, for a hallway console, a sideboard or the end of a long desk. It can hold a corner alone, but it needs about 35 cm of clear depth, so measure the surface first.
Is the shade real glass, or plastic?
Real hand-blown opal glass, which is why the box is heavy. Opal is different from frosted glass: the white is fused inside the wall of the glass and not etched or sprayed on the surface, so light is diffused as it passes through and not scattered off a coating. It also cannot scratch off when you dust it, fog in a warm room or yellow in sunlight as an acrylic shade does.
What control turns it on?
A mechanical ball-chain pull switch at the neck, just below the dome. One pull turns it on and the next turns it off. There is no app, no remote, no touch sensor and no standby LED, on purpose, since each of those either fails or glows at you in the dark. For dimming, use a dimmable bulb with a plug-in dimmer on the lead.
Can it tip over?
It is built to resist that. The base is a 12 mm disc of tempered glass, and the large lamp weighs 3.8 kg with most of the weight at the bottom, so a foot caught in the cable slides it and does not topple it. It is still glass, though: we would not put it on a table a toddler can reach or on a narrow shelf where a knock would send it over the edge.
Which plug does it come with?
Choose UK, EU or US at checkout and that plug is fitted to the lead, with no adaptor in the box and none needed. The lamp runs on 100 to 240 V, so if you later move country you need only the right lead and not a new lamp.
